I need to empty the water out of a largish raised pond. I don't have a pump but do have spare hose. Is the only way to get it flowing by sucking on the hose til the water arrives?

Gneiss, plug one end of the hose or tie a plastic bag around it, fill hose with water from tap and put you thumb over the end. Stick plugged end in bucket or where you want the water, put thumb over end into pond remove thumb, unplug plugged end.
Sorry I just turned you into alluvial rock

Thank you too, Woof...happy to be a rock...x
The essence seems to be to have more water already coming down the hose when the other end goes into your pond

I wonder what would happen if you submerged a long length of hose so it all filled with water; then took most of it out onto the ground but kept the one end in the pond?

would water continue to flow?

gness - please let us know results of your scientific trials ....
Zeuhl, that works if you jee your thumb over the end you lift out till it is lower than the pond

The pond is high, Woof...about three feet above the ground..which is why I am climbing and putting myself in great danger to benefit other Abers.x
You could try filling the hose first, maybe by tap, maybe by leaving it under the water and hoping. Blocking off the ends and then place one in the pond and the other end at a lower level. I think it may be self starting then ? Worth a try. Failing that you could buy a pump.
