Can someone please tell me what is the best feeder in which to put black sunflower seeds? I bought a Chapelwood Sunflower feeder, but the birds do not seem to be able to get the seed from it. I had the black sunflower seed in an enclosed tube feeder which has four apertures, but such a lot of the sunflower seed was falling to the ground and being wasted.
Wit the exception that ours mounts on a 1 inch iron pipe for which I've installed a squirrel baffle that works very well. The feeder attracts nearly all of our types of birds. Even had a Pileated Woodpecker most of the winter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pileated_Woodpecker_Ash_RWD2.jpg
A hint; we use shelled sunflower chips and herats mixed on a 50/50 ration with the plain, smaller black oil seeds. Seems the finshes like these better...
I use two - a plastic Suet Pellet Bird Feeder for sunflower hearts and thin sunflower seeds and a Guardman lantern 'Gazebo' feeder which takes slightly bigger seeds - they're cheap enough to buy two of each - one on and one in the wash! :o)
