New Wooden Gate

Oh its all very exciting - I will be having a brand new wooden gate fitted across my drive - it will be wooden and I wondered what anyone would recommend to treat it with?
I don't think I want it painted but I don't want it highly varnished either - chiefly I want it very well protected - basically so I don't have to do it every six months or so and to make it last longer

I guess it's been made with treated timber. If not, then a good drenching in Cuprinol Preservative or similar brand.

Black paint is the worst. It attracts the heat of the sun, and flakes badly after a while.
For a "woody" look.... go for Sikkens or Sadolin, or any of the known brands of stain.
For colours, my favourite (not a paint, but actually a coloured woodstain) is Solignum. Noprimer... just 2 or 3 coats of Solignum...

Ric, I imagine the new gate at the entrance to your tree lined drive that winds past the lake in the capability brown sculpted landscape and leads to the grandiose steps of your elegant georgian manor. ;)

Even better is 50% creosote mixed with 50% used motor oil - but hardly user friendly! I note Builder's recommendations, but I'd also suggest Butinox solvent-based wood stain, (which he has also approved of in the past). Not at all cheap, but the stuff has incredible lasting properties. I have a treated wooden gatepost I bolted to a wall over 20 years ago, and that I only repaint every 5 to 7 years. It's still in top-notch condition.

As Chuckfickens states creosote can only be used by trade. Use or purchase by the public is illegal.

It can't be used or purchased by trades people either (trades people such a gardener etc)... it's only permitted to be used in industrial situations now, such the factories that manufacture telegraph poles.

My daughters collie dog had go at my sons bedroom carpet yesterday. She shredded a fair patch. I trimmed off some of the damage then put heavy duty tape on the rest but it's not staying put. I cant afford to recarpet the whole bedroom. Any advice much appreciated. TIA
