Good Morning All.

I had double glazing put in four years ago along with new doors.
Now the back door won`t lock, can`t turn the key at all.
Rang the company who put them in and he said that the locks don`t come under the guarantee and there will be a charge for fixing.
Can anyone advise me on this as this does not sound right to me...

Go over your guarantee with a fine tooth-comb.
IF, the locks aren't covered, get a quote from firm and also from a few local locksmiths.

Thank you Alba...not too happy about this...the locks should be included...will have to do what you say and check it out.Have a good day
Kloof, I'd be fizzing mad.

It's a bit like buying a car and then having to fork out extra for an engine imo.
Hope it turns out OK.
Does the lock work when the door is ajar?
Have you tried spraying the lock with WD40?
We are having a similar problem with a back door we had installed in October 2011. A friend who is a joiner visited at the weekend and told us it is not a problem with the lock but with the door dropping slightly so the lock is not aligning properly. He said it was due to the door not being fitted properly in the first place. We have fallen out with the builder who put the door in so our joiner friend is going to sort it out this week and says it is a simple job to remedy.
It could be that you have a similar problem rather than the lck being faulty?

Tilly, yes, the catch moves in and out when I move the handle. Can open and close...but cannot lock...key will just not turn, insoite of lifting the handle as one has to for these kind of locks..Actually,I hate it...prefer the old Yale lock myself.
*lock*
Question Author
Yes,use WD4O...thinking that would help.

You have a point there mrs O.
We had the same problem with our front door. Last week the Everest engineer came out and re aligned the door. Now it works perfectly. So as mrs_o has just said, it might be the door and not the lock.
Question Author
Good thinking Mrs O!!!
come to think of it, I'm wondering if the raising of the handle to be able to lock/unlock might be a design flaw and it throws off the alignment?
If the lock thingys in the door move in and out when the door is ajar then I think the door is the problem, not the lock.....which should be covered by the guarantee.
Let us know how you get on.
Question Author
Will do...have a very good day...all of you.

Oh something I forgot...when I lift the handle which you have to when locking...it makes an awful grating noise.
I agree sounds like the door has dropped !
Is that just with the door closed or does it do it when the door is ajar as well?
Question Author
It is when I have put the key in and have to lift the handle right up...only door this when locking..
Question Author
*only do*
