Beginning to think I've imagined this, but I thought I'd seen an extension cable that was like a large spring. About 6 inches in diameter so too large to be mown over. It would extend as necessary and compact back down when not in use and wouldn't tangle up.

Or was it a Tomorrow's World type thing that never made it to the high street?

Ive never heard of such a thing, sounds like a good idea though.
If such a thing exists, I'd be worried about using it. All electrical cables heat up when in use but that's not a problem with an unwound cable, which dissipates heat to the surrounding air. (That's why cable reels normally carry a warning saying: 'Unwind reel fully before use'.). Any cable that's wound up tightly would be likely to overheat when used with a fairly high-power appliance (such as a lawnmower).
You may be thinking about a Garden Hose which does that sort of thing.
