The rubber door seal has been replaced as the other one was black & smelly despite me wiping it out after every wash & always leaving door open.
Engineer says I should not use liquid washing gel & to change to powder, has anyone else any experience of this ? Your feedback would be helpful especially as I've just bought a new bottle of liquid !!!

You don't have to change to powder so long as you do the occasional long hot wash with thick bleach or vinegar.
Same problem, told it was fabric conditioner.
Hate it, have been doing same as you, so am getting a new washer.
Have been told it happens to most of them.
Tried the clean, the bleach, the vinegar, the special washes they don't work.
Have been trailing round shops looking for a new one, have been told the most reliable is a Samsung. Have never bought Samsung before and need to delve a bit deeper.
Engineer told me to do a boil wash once a week in my Hotpoint which I do. No problem with the seal in 4 years.
Birdie....my washing machine is about eight years old and I use both gel and powder as the fancy takes me.
I do use Dr. Beckmann cleaner every six to eight weeks and my machine never smells.....x

Thanks woofgang, TheWinner, Meg & gness it seems to be a common problem, not sure how to tackle it especially with a new rubber seal, Machine is approx 3 years old & we had an extended guarantee so repair cost nothing but obviously don't want it to happen again.
No problems with Bosch, never thought to wash it out, I use gel now, before that liquid and sometimes Vanish powder

On the subject of keeping machines clean...I don't know if all machines are the same or if everyone knew this but me....
When I remove the detergent drawer there is a series of small square holes in the top of the gap. An engineer told me to clean those out by shoving in and pulling back and forward one of those little plastic ridged parcel ties...think that is what they are. Amazing the gunk that comes out.
Hmm, tomorrow I'll be sniffing and checking the drawer!
one of those little plastic ridged parcel ties...

There called cable ties, gness.
I think some of the problems must be the quality of water. The engineer said he had more problems in my area than any other because of the water..if it messes up a washing machine think what would happen if I drank it...I shall stick to my Guinness...x
I've got a Bosch too, Sibs. Never had any problems with it smelling. I use gel or liquid in a wee ball thing in the drum. I also put conditioner in the drawer.

But then I take the drawer out completely and leave it to dry on the radiator in the laundry room, and open the door to let the drum air.

I also boil wash the towels at least once a week so I think that helps keep it clean too.
Ahhh thanks Tony...did wonder how I would tie a parcel with one...:-) x
Mine told me to change from powder and only use liquids :-\
Mmmm...mine's a Bosch too....the machine that doesn't pong???
Bosch no probs...do leave door open when not in use to dry it though
Seems all the sensible folk have Bosch ! Lol
They make decent spark plugs as well, gness !, they don't smell either.
I have a Hotpoint washing machine, use liquid tabs, and leave door open when not in use, nothing else is done or used. There has never been a smell
Always do that minty and I do a boil for towels as 2sp says
