Wall Tiles

The tile adhesive says "Surfaces must be flat, dry, sound, free from oil, grease and dust"

My question - how flat?

Does this mean that every bit of the old adhesive has to be removed? Or can I just sand down any bumpy bits?

I think it means it is a right pain to get the tiles to look right and match heights with their neighbours if you have a wavy surface. It not flat, call in an expert.

So it doesn't matter that old adhesive is on the wall as long as it's flat?

It is more or less flat. A quick sand job would sort it out. I just want to make sure it's okay to put the adhesive on it.

You're going to put adhesive on top anyway, both to stick the tile to the wall and to raise it to the same level as those tiles next to it. If there is a lot of old adhesive on the wall you may use more new than is ideal to level everything, but I'd not worry too must about getting it 100% clear. That said I've only ever tiled over walls that didn't have anything more than wallpaper on it previously.

No problem as long as the old adhesive is! Flat. Run up the wall with a straight edge and if there are only minored lump and go a head.
