People to remove their shoes when they come into your home? I don't but was thinking about what we actually tread in when walking out and about and perish the thought! :(

It seems to be a custom that just happened, so we go along with it. Our previous houses had doormats, so shoes were wiped, but many of the modern ones don't have doormats, so maybe that's where the custom came from.
I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to remove their shoes when visiting. I have been asked to removed my shoes when visiting other peoples houses, but have always felt slightly uncomfortable and worried about spilling a drop of drink or something as they are obviously very house proud. I care more about my friends than my furniture!
Only bedrooms and corridor are carpetted in my house so no, I'd never want anyone to take their shoes off; I'd be liable if they slipped and if they were bare footed would have to get the floorcloth out! I remember being greeted with these thin slipper things when walking on wooden floorboards in flats years ago.
