Sanding Lloyd Loom Furniture

How would you go about sanding Lloyd Loom furniture to prepare it for painting?

I can't see an easy way of doing it given the irregularity of it.

I'd use the finest grade sandpaper I could find and a lot of elbow grease.

But how do I deal with the irregular texture?

Eccles, you can buy liquid sander which you paint on. That might work.

Does it really need to be sanded? I would just scrub it with a stiff brush and then paint it. Lloyd loom is made from twisted paper, not cane and is quite easily damaged.

Nitromors would be murder.

I was surprised at the advice F&B gave re sanding it. It was my intention to go for a stiff brush over and a wipe down with thinners/meths prior to repainting.

Eccles, I didn't mean Nitromors. I have a product called Easy Sand. It says ,on the tin, 'Liquid sandpaper for sound painted surfaces. Just wipe on, wipe off and paint.'
On the back it says,' Use instead of sandpaper for dust free preparation, Removes grease and dirt, Ideal for awkward or fiddly jobs.@

It's the wipe off aspect that would be difficult because of the irregular nature of LL furniture. I'm concerned that a paint/wipe on product would eat into the paint.....and beyond.....

Word isn't, I am we'll aware of the make up of LL he de my concern on how to prepare it for painting.

I might have to contact them directly as sanding in the conventional sense doesn't make sense!

Hi Eccles...I have painted lots of Lloyd Loom. I just gave a light sanding with one of those sanding sponge thingys and they were fine.
I haven't done any since discovering Liquid Sanding stuff...it was useless on my doors but can't see why it wouldn't be enough for your needs.

Thanks Gness. So I'm reading into the advice that as long as the surface layer is well keyed you don't need to worry to much about the lower layers?!?!

I've never had a problem, Eccles....just light sanding and they are still okay and waiting for a change of colour when I get a round tuit....x

Having looked at the liquid sandpaper, the mention of use on 'sound surfaces' makes me fear for LL.

I'll stick to a light rub down to key the surface paint a wipe over with meth and then paint.

The UK Lusty Furniture Company still makes LLoyd Loom. Their advice on re-painting is to apply several coats of thin spray, and not to use a brush. Have a look at the comments here, especially from Keyna, who works for Lusty...

Get some Libnet furniture restorer, apply it with wire wool, let it dry, then remove it with wire wool. Cleaned and sanded in one operation....job's a good un.

Thanks Carrust, I'm not sure that would be suitable for Lloyd Loom stuff :-(
