Any ideas anybody, I'm hoping to find a free one somewhere.

It doesnt need to be complex just enough to store info on about 4 generations, really its so I dont accidentally interbreed, well they all look the same after a few months, then I need to work out a way of ringing them with an identity without spending a fortune on expensive rings.

I can't help with the family tree program, Ratter. Could you take a photo of each bird and make a folder with them all in?

I dont think photos would help, if I have 30 buff orpingtons from 3 generations, when they are all fully grown they will be pretty much identical, I think a data base may help but I cant do data bases, Ive never used Microsoft access

Oh, I see, Ratter. I didn't realise that they would not have any distinguishing features. Photos won't help then.
Made for dogs, but same principle: http://dogbreederpro.com/
Microchip them.
This site offers free sports tournament draw sheets, if you choose the Single Elimination, 16 person sheet that should give you room for 4 generations.

Thanks Lankeela, I will have a look at that software, as for Micro chipping, it would cost a small fortune to chip hundreds of chickens lol.
My Gran bred poultry for decades. I`m not sure that she worried about interbreeding. I know she didn`t ring her chickens. Are you sure it`s necessary?
Question Author
237SJ, very necessary to breed good chickens, and interbreeding chickens can have the same results as interbreeding any other animal, however, if it is just for egg production i dont suppose it would matter to any great degree, I however want to breed quality "breed" chickens.
Hello Ratters, not spoken or seen you around in a while. How are you liking your new home and how's the farm coming along. Hope everything is well as could be and everything you've expected. All the best. x

(I know, not a response to your question, just wanted to say hello)
Ratter - I`m just not sure that breeding lines matter with chickens in the same way that they do with for example, cattle or even sheep.

I have been talking to a few chicken breeders all over the country and I assure you they are a very precise crowd when it comes to blood lines with top quality birds. If you breed a superior bird you need to know the parentage, the same if you breed some poor quality birds.

Hi society, all is going great, really loving the hill farm and all the animals.
I wouldn't know about poultry, but if you search something like 'free blank pedigree forms', there are plenty of dog and cat ones around.

I would imagine you'd find something similar on a poultry breeders' organisation website.
Sounds like a dream come true. I wish you and your family much happiness. x
