My neighbour has had works done to provide an electric supply to his detached garage. The underground supply is by an armoured cable but the works within the garage are causing concern. All the internal twin and earth PVC wiring to supply two twin sockets and the lighting have been fixed to the brick walls with cable clips and he feels that they are vulnerable to damage. Is this within current electrical regulations or should they have been encased in conduit or trunking for protection?

There's no specific regulation for the installation method...however the cables should be installed taking into consideration all external influences...ie impact damage etc.
We always use trunking or conduit ...at least on the vertical drops within a domestic garage. Ask the installer to protect the cables in the vulnerable areas...it should only take an hour to do.

If he's not entirely happy he should ask the contractor for a bit of conduit, it won't cost much or take long to fit.

Thank you BRIGHTSPARK. If I understand you correctly, whilst the instalation does'nt break any regulations, the use of conduit or trunking would have been "good practice".

Yes mal...it would have been good practice...a trait lacking with many contractors.

Did the customer receive an installation certificate and has local building control been notified of the work?This is a legal requirement under part P of the building regs.
