My Toyota Celica has just failed its MOT on the emissions test. The mechanic said it was throwing blue smoke out from around 3000 revs upwards. He said at worst it could be the piston rings and it would need a new engine, but then he recommended trying some stuff to pour in the fuel tank which can clean any blockages etc. He named some stuff by forte which had very good results but I cant remember exactley what it is called. Any ideas please? I've spent a lot of money on fixing this car up and I really don't want to have to scrap it just yet!
Injector Cleaner? May work and can do no harm. Don't bank on it though.
Oil flush and change for full synthetic, air filter and the injector cleaner. After that it may be time to bite the bullet.
Get the engine compression tested to start the diagnosis.The problem could be ...worn rings...cracked head...or failed head gasket.If its blue smoke it sounds like oil.Whats the mileage and does it use much oil.
Oil was changed in a full service in November last year. Only done about 3000 miles since. Its done 140000 miles now but it does have a full service history. The mechanice did say it is burning oil. I topped it up about 4 weeks ago, maybe I put too much in? I top the oil up roughly every 5/6 months and always use full synthetic.
If the oil only needs topping up every 5-6 months, I'd say it's not burning oil. Try the injector cleaner from Fortè and keep yor fingers crossed.
As Bright Spark said, a compression test should show if it's down on compression due to ring wear.
If there's blue smoke when the engine is under load it is likely to be worn cylinders, pistons or rings. Your engine has covered a high mileage.
If you drive down a long hill with the throttle closed, then floor the pedal for a few seconds, blue smoke from the exhaust will likely indicate worn inlet/exhaust valves.
Righto. Not looking promising is it. Ordered some engine flush stuff from ebay, I'll give that a bash and see what happens. If no joy then its off to the scrapper. Thanks everyone
Is fully synthetic oil recommended for your car.Just because its expensive dont mean its the right one.Are you using the right viscosity. On a worn engine thin oil will vastly increase wear
Was the car sending out Blue smoke prior to the MOT? does the car blue smoke from start up? if yes to the Latter, Valve stem seals, but as said, get the engine compression tested.
