My shower drain is making a gurgle sound when I use the hand wash basin. I did a google search and some sites say it's a blockage that can be cleared with chemicals. Should I try this and what chemical should I use? I dont really want to call out a plumber! Thanks.
It needn't be a blockage, just that the water flowing out from the washbasin is creating a suction that's drawing air through the P-trap (or s-bend) of the shower. If it is a blockage, caustic soda is normally used clear it. Nasty stuff. Follow the instructions.
Try using something like Mr Muscle - but please be warned, my handbasin started to gurgle a few weeks when I emptied the bath. It turned out to be a blockage in the outside soilpipe (probably a toilet paper jam) and the next thing I know, the bathwater was coming up in the basin, and then foolishly I flushed the loo and it refilled all over the floor. Keep a close eye on it!
I put some hair removal cream down the plughole now and again just a dab and let it sit a while ( overnight ) before rinsing away. Hair, apparently is the main culprit in blocking up bathroom drains. By putting some Nair ( from the pound shop ) down the drain it keeps it clear. It might be worth trying some drain and plughole before that . Good luck.
