timer plug

i have this timer plug, it's one of those on which there is a programming dial made up of tiny little pins, each representing 15 minutes, which you press down depending on what time you want your lamp to go on and for how long. you plug an appliance into the timer plug, and there's a yellow switch on the side of it. when it's up, then the appliance can be used as normal, timer mode not active, and when it's down, the timer mode is on and the lamp, or whatever is plugged into it, should go on at the programmed time. for some reason this won't work for me. has anybody else ever had any trouble with these?  can you help me?

uh, none of the appliances i've plugged into the timer are going on at all when they're supposed to.

2 suggestions. Is there a fuse in the plug and has it blown? Have you set the clock on the timer plug?

Take it back, get a replacement.

Just a thought, before you take it back... I have one of these and instead of pressing down the little pins, you pull them out for when you want the appliance on, and push them in for when you want it off. This might be totally different to yours but worth a try ..?

Might seem a bit daft but the appliance that you plug into the timer must be set ready, i.e switched on

I recommend 'Smiths' brand mechanical timers above all others. Fairly cheap from Wilkos or Argos.
