Yucca plants are a desert weed that will grow on a concrete sidewalk if only they get a spray of water occasionally (like, once or twice a year!) But they will grow like crazy in potting soil. Their natural soil is a high-drainage sandy soil, slightly acid and dampened only occasionally. If you want them to grow fast use a richer soil and water and fertilize frequently. But if you want them to maintain a given size give them almost nothing. They are very hardy and will tolerate a wide variety of conditions, up to saturated soil which will strangle them.
