You can wash it, low temp, gentle wash. I wouldn't spin, just drip dry outdoors. http://help.berghaus.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/442

We always wash ours in the washing machine and then use NIK-WAX wash-in to re-proof them.

Thank you both
I've just washed a very similar coat as Robinia's suggestion ....and was amazed just how "new" it looked. Do avoid spinning too much if you can....no spinning is best.
I use this stuff for my waterproof gear. Tech wash it first the use the reproofer
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

Its a good idea to run your washing machine on a hot wash (needn't be a long one) empty to make sure that the machine is clean when the stuff goes in and make sure that your softener dispenser is clean so as not to interfere with the specialist cleaner.
I've always use Nik-Wax too and I put it in the dryer :-)
the reproofer actually recommends tumble drying for best results. You don't need to dry the coat between washing and re proofing.

I've the washing machine but no spin drier. Cleaning it will be the first step and then getting the Nikwax and spray it on?
Sandy does your washing machine not spin? The reproofer washes in, you don't need to spray it...or do you mean you have no tumble dryer? Doesn't matter, just choose a warm day and hang the coat in the sun to dry, its the heat what does it.

No separate tumble drier
do you mean you haven't got a tumble dryer at all? or is your washing machine one with a tumble dryer integrated into the machine?
Question Author
At the end of the wash cycle it spins. I thought a tumble drier was something separate.

Does nobody long for the pre mechanised days when you'd hall fill the bath with warm water, add the dirty clothes and some soap powder, and stamp all over them for a while?
Your feet came out very clean, too.
You can ofter set the washing machine to stop before it spins, Sandy. If you have e membrane in your coat (Goretex, or similar) this is a good idea as the spin can rupture the membrane. If you can't avoid a spin, set it to minimum speed.
a tumble dryer can be separate but nowadays you can get washing machines with a tumble dryer in.
I have always slow spun my goretex lined coats and never had a problem.
