It looks like a Japanese Azalea to me.

Thank you boxtops, that was quick. Is this a hardy shrub? I will have to look up information now but couldn't find the pic in my gardening book. Thank you

yup. deciduous (loses leaves in winter) azalea. Very hardy but hates wet feet. needs well drained loamy (peaty or leafmould) acid soil.

whatever you do, butterbun, don't be tempted to use it as a house plant. I did years back, and it smells really bad indoors - you don't notice it out in the garden!

I love that smell boxy, its like crown imperials, I love that smell too.
