Heard an interesting and heated debate yesterday on Jeremy Vine ( I know some of you dislike him but please refrain from commenting :-)) about artificial grass.
There was a very knowledgeable chap from a supplier of artificial grass who said the technology has moved on from the astro turf of old and that drainage was now not such a problem.
He said many of his customers had dogs in the garden that had ruined lawns etc or children doing similar and that the ease of up keep was also appealing. Other customers included people in flats with balconies and the like who didn't have access to a "proper" garden.
Artificial grass ? My thought is that if it suits you go ahead, indulge yourself. But personally I'd rather have the real McCoy even if it does require a little attention.
I looked into it for my fair sized lawn, not rolling acres mows in about 20 minutes. I would have kept the grass in the tortoise enclosure and kept the flowerbed and the tiny wooded area (5 trees and about eight shrubs) I wasn't convinced that it would have stood up to my mad dogs' need to dig and it would have been an expensive experiment so i decided not. The fake grass is now in a water permeable backing so properly laid it should drain as well as the land beneath it. I have seen some samples of the good stuff and its very good. The other thing that put me off with the dogs is that the stuff we looked at was pinned to the ground with long u shaped wires and I wasn't convinced that there would stay pit and looked dangerous if pulled out.
No problem with a/grass,but there is a bungalow I walk past every week and you can tell just by glancing that it`s not real, looks too good.If your o.k with that, then fine !
