Garage Roof

I have decided to have my garage roof repaired at last and have had one quote from a local man that I know will do a good job. The only thing I am worried about is that he is quoting for a "bituwell" type roof and having looked this up I feel it looks very cheap and flimsy. He does know that I am not made of money but i would rather pay a bit more if necessary. However I may be wrong and it could be perfectly suitable, your thoughts please, Mr. Builder I am in trouble again ha ha ha xx

It's a good product. Similar to "Onduline" .....



It'll do the job well for years. I know just what you mean about the flimsy, cheap appearance. Far better than the old corrugated steel or asbestos-cement sheets though. The colours available do help to make these sheets a lot more attractive. I would give colour a bit of thought.

Something I prefer is "box-profile sheeting."

It has fewer corrugations, and looks far more modern. Used on commercial and industrial buildings a lot.
It's finished with a special powder-coated paint that lasts well. A good range of colours too...

It'll cost a little more than the others, but looks smart.

i don't know anything about "bituwell" sheeting but we used onduline on the milking parlour where i used to work back in the early 80s and even though it looked good it did sag terribly so we had to put in more timbers every couple of feet for extra support. this was a normal fairly steep sloping roof whereas a lot of garages are quite flat.

That's a good point, Paul. I would certainly have the purlins (timber crossmember supports) fixed closer together for that reason.

Stiffer products such as the box-profile don't have that problem.

Thank you both. I thought I would hear from you Mr. Builder and if you say its ok its ok with me. Yes Paul I saw that when I was looking on the internet, but I think I will stick with what i have been quoted for. It is my 80th birthday today as it happens so as long as it's good for a few years when inevitably the bungalow will have to be sold that's all that matters. Thanks again Janet x
