I've just got in to my flat and there seems to be a weird haze in the flat. There's no smell, no smoke alarm, nothing was left on other than the cooker red power button (cooker was cold). What could it be? I have gas central heating but the heating had not come on yet. I'm a bit worried so any ideas appreciated.

Check all of your electrical sockets. Also place your hand on the wall over where the power cables run into the sockets. (I've had a cable suddenly get really hot, even though there was nothing plugged into the socket).

Then check all of your electrical appliances, including things such as mobile phone chargers that you might have left plugged in.

However it might simply be that something outside has caused the problem. I once spent ages trying to track down the cause of a burning smell in my house. I eventually found that it was coming from a power tool being used by someone in their garden five doors down the street!

Update: thin layer of dust over everything in the kitchen- all over the hob and pans. God knows how it got there. So the haze is dust. Flat underneath is being done up but surely their dust couldn't get into my flat?!
Possibly; dust can get everywhere, especially if a lot's being created.
Yes dust gets everywhere , it will be from downstairs. You need to talk to them about cleaning it up and stopping it from happening again.
Yes pop down and explain, they can probably seal things better. Ask themto come up and look at the dust and request arrangements are made for your flat to be cleaned professionally and regularly.
Why do I suspect one would get short shrift to any suggestion they should pay for cleaning the flat above ? I would suspect an apology, an explanation they are doing what they can, and the hope the owner of the flat above can seal their flat better.
Hi Scarlett, flats usually have a common soil stack that runs vertically up through the building. It takes waste water away to the drains.

There's often a gap or two somewhere in the boxing-in. The air column in the boxing-in draws anything up from downstairs... smells etc.

Just a possibility. It depends on the age of the flat.
