Friend is wallpapering, she's planning to put the paterned paper above the dado rail. I always put mine below.

Is there a 'right' way to do it? Or is it just personal preference?

If I was doing a Feature Wall with patterned paper I would remove the Dado rail, if fitted, and paper top to bottom.
It goes above!

Er, hang on a moment, no it doesn't! Below! Yes, that's it, below!

Oh, blow it, let's put it above AND below!

Actually, if we're doing that anyway, why can't we use two different patterns?

. . . or simply turn one sideways?

Or, to put it all another way . . .
It's whatever you think looks best!!!

(BTW: I really love that last one above!)

Baldric, she doesn't want to remove the dado as, like me, she is afraid it will damage the wall.

Buenchico, some interesting combinations there!
I think it's probably personal preference but to me it just looks wrong when its above. My hallway has a dado rail and although there is no wallpaper, I have the light colour emulsion above and the darker one below.
Traditionally, the pattern goes on top. The bottom paper was usully lincrusta or anaglypta , which could be painted, as this gets more wear than the top area.
Always above, that's if you have any class ;o)
I'd go below....but I don't have any class :-)
I'd pay an interior designer to sort it all out for me - that's real class ;-)
Always below, that is if you have any taste. :-) x
I love the Lincrusta Victoriana example in Chris's link.
Actually, you should do all the walls the same colour and have a feature wall with patterned paper says Mrs Panky
That's how my room is, Panky.
ummmmm you've got class then lol
No, I honestly don't and I have the bruises to prove it.... :-)

Thanks all, I'm not really classy but I do take pride in my home.
I find this an unusual question. Surely these sort of decisions is what interior design is all about ?
