Every time I go out into the garden they descend upon me in hordes and I have to come in again. They're everywhere! Horrible! Is anyone else plagued with them and is there a deterrent?

Pair of old net curtains and Nippon if you find the nest. :-)
Perhaps a plague sent by the Almighty. Are your God fearing neighbours also affected ? :-)
Have a game of tennis with them, naomi. Your guaranteed to win every match with one of these.

Could they be thunder flies? http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/advice/pests_and_diseases/identifier.shtml?thrips
I've never seen them here in Devon, but they were terrible pests in Bedfordshire...we lived near open fields there. Black specks on everything...forget putting the laundry out!
You weren't there when I went to answer, dustypuss!
I probable just nipped out to the toilet PF ;-)

No, that's not them. These are round - ladybird shaped - only black - or probably very dark brown - and very tiny. I just had a good look at one on my finger and I could see its wings which are short and which I can't see when they're flying. I can't see any markings on them.
