Cleaning drains

Anyone got any tips on cleaning the drain from a kitchen sink, the water empties very slowly. Would prefer an old fashioned remedy rather than chemicals.

Get a sink plunger - any hardware store will supply - and push it down over the plug hole, and then tug sharrply upwards to release it. This creates a vacumn in the pipe, and the re-rush of water usually carrries the blockage away with it. Run plenty of hot water and bleach down after it to kill the germs.

Old fashioned washing soda followed by a kettle of boiling water is good for clearing grease in the pipes.

Remove the trap under the sink and poke it about to remove all the gunk. Much better than any detergent will ever be.

I use Soda Crystals, hot water & a plunger.

When using the plunger press a cloth over the overflow outlet or else you could just end up recirculating the water instead of pushing against the blockage.

ianess is right - we have a double sink, so I put a cloth over one plug hole, whist doing the other, etc!
