Am I Being Unreasonable?
66 Answers
I was just wondering what others thought. Our neighbours' gardeners come every two weeks on a Friday morning and begin work at 8 a.m. We are retired so don't need to be up early and yet we're woken by the noise of the hedge trimmer, lawn mower, strimmer and leaf blower. It's a horrible way to start the day.

Yes you are being unreasonable. People with "neighbours from hell" would love being disturbed just once a fortnight at 8.00am. You say you go to bed as late as 1.00 or 2.00am. I hope you have a detached property otherwise your TV is likely to be disturbing YOUR neighbours every day!!!! Given that you know what day the gardeners come, why not have an earlier night on the Thursday and get up before the workers arrive next door.
Yes, we do have a detached property and we don't have our tv blaring out. You can't make yourself go to sleep early just because you're going to be up early the next day.
It's been galling this week as we're having a new kitchen fitted and have been setting the alarm every morning to be up in time for the workman. On Friday, the fitter had an appointment and wasn't due to arrive until lunchtime so we thought great, no alarm and we can have a lie in only to be woken by the irritating and persistent noise of a hedge cutter etc.

Do you have a garden Foxlee? Could you time your hedgetrimming to co-incide with the neighbours and get all done and out of the way on a Friday fortnight? Even better, employ the same gardener and persuade him to start at 10am!
Sorry to say I think 8am is a reasonable hour too. Especially as its just biweekly.

We do have a garden Maydup but no hedge. My husband mows the lawn but at some point during the day or afternoon and the neighbours are at work. Apparently they did ask him about coming at a different time and he had no other time slots. I've come up with a cunning plan - ask him to give us a quote for mowing our lawn and if he can fit us in and gives us a time during the day, I can then tell our neighbours that he has such and such a time free!
Mmmmm....not bad, Foxlee......but if I were to come up with a cunning plan for an early morning wake-up.....it would involve......Fizz and fresh orange......sensual perfume......fresh lingerie......scented candles......soft music......
Mind you....that'd be a lot of effort as I live alone..... :-(.....so I'd just switch on the radio.....x

You're getting yourself into an awful tangle with that plan, FoxLee.
Maybe your neighbours want him to come at 8:00am because for whatever reason it suits them ......and to fob you off, they said he had no other time slots.
8:00 is not unreasonably early.
Don't try to interfere with your neighbours' business. No good will come of it.

Before I retired, I was woken up once by a tree feller next door at 07.45 on a Saturday morning. I yelled at him to please make a bit More noise. My neighbour came round later that day and apologised.
Now I am retired and lie-ins are the norm, once a fortnight wouldn't bother me at all. So, yes I think you are being unreasonable.
