We are moving into a house where the sitting room fire has a marble hearth, it has been very neglected with several marks but I would like to keep it.any helpful hints how I could smarten it up.

I've had some luck cleaning marble clock cases using 40% hydrogen peroxide (hair dye) and a waterless hand cleaner GO-JO. Steel wool grade 0000 is useful. If the marks and stains are deeply embedded, then you'll just have to live with them. Don't forget: always try the cleaning method in an inconspicuous area first.

I forgot to mention that GO-JO hand cleaner has a type that is abrasive-free and a type that contains a mild abrasive. Buy both of them and see which one is best for your job. I checked their website, and it is available to you in the UK.
