We are about to move into a house that has a number, but no name. If we want to give it a name, who do we have to tell?

No-one! Royal Mail will still use the number, but you can use the new name as well - just tell everyone who writes to you.
Just to clarify Maelogman's answer: You can add a name to address but you can't remove the number. Royal Mail need the number because it's part of your 'unique location' (i.e. Your house number + your postcode = your house and nowhere else). It's also a legal requirement to continue to display the number clearly on the front of your house.

Chris

As all have said,you can add a name to your numbered address, but what are you going to choose?

Where my mum lives, there are no street names or house numbers, every house is known by its name eg;
The Falling Down Cottage,
Village Name,
Postal Town,
Postcode

So she would have some difficulty changing the house name.

Perhaps when I retire I shall buy my country cottage and call it DunAnswerBankin' ? What do you reckon?

If you are supersticious, you should check the history of your house. If it has ever had a name, it is apparently considered very very very unlucky to give it a new name
