Wax And Wood Stain

Instead of buying a different fire surround, I'd like to stain the one I've got but it has been waxed (many moons ago!) Does anyone know if I have to strip or anything else first please? I'll sell this and pick up another if it needs too much work. Thank you, Sue.

You could use a wax remover first, Sue.
