It was a beautiful day here, bright and dry, and I managed to get three loads of washing on the line. Before the sun went down I went out to get it all in and low and behold the neighbour but one had decided to have a bonfire. This is three o'clock in the afternoon and the air is thick with it. Why not wait until dusk? I'm furious! The whole lot stinks and its too late to rewash it.

Tomorrow we're out all day and I'm back to work on Monday. Grrrr

I've hung it over a clothes horse in the spare room and lit an oil burner. Unless anyone has any better ideas?

You can light bonfires in your gardens over there?
What does your council say about bonfires? Here, we can have bonfires only after dusk.
no restrictions here at all !
If you lit a fire in your garden in an urban area here in Ontario, you'd soon have a fire truck pulling up and you'd probably be given a hefty fine.
only common courtesy prevails...if I want to burn anything I wait till later in the day..and if immediate neighbours have washing out..I phone to tell them of my intentions
I've just rechecked my council website and there are no restrictions at all, just advice.
What happened to smokeless zones, then?
Garden bonfires

You’re allowed garden bonfires in smoke control areas but you need to follow the rules on bonfires.

Maydup, can you put the clothes horse in the garden tomorrow, before you go out?
Maydup, wait until your neighbours hang out their washing and then you have a bonfire. To make sure the wind is blowing in their direction, hire a wind machine!!!!! Problem solved.
There is a house near me and their chimney is awful, I've thought something was on fire a few times due to the smell and amount of smoke, it even had sparks coming out of it once. I can't see it's meant to put out that much smoke or I can't see how anyone was able to breathe/see properly when chimneys were much more in use.
Thanks, hc. Just had a look at our council website. It's quite informative.
Does your council allow bonfires, tilly?
I remember the childhood smog. We all smelled of smoke, especially on winter nights.
Yes it does, hc. I didn't know that before. Lots of advice about being courteous and cautious too.
I remember how quickly new buildings became filthy, too, and windows.
Mum had to wash the net curtains every week.

It was a badge of honour to have clean white nets. She used a washing blue thing to whiten them.

Well the spare room smells lovely but the clothes are not much better. I think I'll get away with a few things but I'll just have to rewash the rest.

Suppose I could put it out tomorrow while I'm out. Fingers crossed he has no more stuff to burn. Some people have no idea do they?
Reckitt's Blue, Tilly? A cube in a net?
It's a curious fact that a fabric that is very slightly blue deceives the human eye into thinking the fabric is whiter than white!
