squirrels in our loft

Does anyone know an humane way of getting rid of squirrels in the loft.  We want to repair the hole but don't want to trap them.  I have tried sonic repellers but they haven't worked.

This was on coronation street recently. Use a football rattle thingummy. They will then move next door with hilarious consequences.  Ho Ho

Rags placed strategically soaked in a strong smelling disinfectant should do it, I used creosote, but its no lnger available.
