I've a weird enjoyment in going into the garden really early, especially after rain, and collecting all the snails and slugs that are quietly munching my flowers and shrubs. Is it wrong that I throw them all over next doors hedge?? I'm joking!!

you do know that in 2 years time, there will be a knock on your door and the snail will ask 'Why did you do that?'
I do a snail pick in my jammies around 5am every day...'fraid mine go to snail heaven !!
got to ask why you have snails in your jammies Minty
lol....
A snail was once mugged by a slug, when asked if he could give a description of the assailant he said. "no, it all happened so quickly".
You need to throw them a lot further than that if you don't want them to return to their "home" garden.
We can't put slug pellets down as we are worried that our Labradors would eat them. I've heard that a beer trap would work as apparently slugs are attracted to beer.........but why should the little b****rs die happy !! We do chuck them over the fence at the bottom of the garden but if OG is right they'll only make their way back - even if it does take them a fortnight.
I put them in a 'sealed' compost bin. There they have plenty to eat and drink and the amount of compost they manage to turn over quickly is amazing. About every three months I leave the lid off and they go free, and then after a few days I round them up again, 'in my pyjamas'. Everybody wins.

Ok I confess I did throw one over next doors fence once - only to look up and see the woman watching me from a bedroom window. Awkward!!
I did that with frogs smow !! busted !
You could try putting broken eggshells round your plants. The snails don't like crawling over anything sharp-edged. [But that might spoil your early-morning snail safari, I suppose!]

Seriously I don't know where they come from!!

Ha ha ha !! I asked for that lol
I'm a Hosta addict, so slugs and snails are my deadly enemy. However, to prevent them being munched wholesale I tend to grow them in pots and move them around my borders where a little filling in is needed. Last year I tried copper bands around the mouth of the pots and had huge success with it. You just need to try and keep all leaves out of contact with neighbouring plants / walls or those cunning little snails and slugs will climb aboard!
I used to throw slugs and snails over next doors fence because she asked me to. She kept chickens and you should have heard the squawks of delight as they fought over them.
Question Author
Where did you get the copper bands Frazier?
I didn't know that chickens ate snails??
Chickens eat anything and everything! Snails, slugs, frogs, baby birds, bugs spiders, worms......you name it they'll give it a go
