In our last house, a nineteen thirties house, the cylinder imploded one day during the really cold snowy weather. What a bang!

Our current cylinder is insulated. It does not have a jacket on it.
If its copper, are you letting the plumber take it away? Or are you taking it to the scrapys yourself (ie. you get the money, not the plumber?)
Tilly2 never heard of an immersion heater being "welded" in or did your plumber mean he couldn't undo it?
When I had a change of heating system the plumber just nicked the copper tank without asking. Bloody cheek.

Pity this thread can't be filed under 'scams', if they're convincing people to junk a thick-plate cylinder which might have lasted 40+ years, which the plumber gets scrap value of (how much? - separate thread?) *and* charge you for a brand new one, with half the plate thickness, which might corrode through in 10-20 years, for some unfortunate locales.

If you use a 'in-line anti-scaler', it will out-live you.
I no longer have a hot water tank at the property. A Combi was installed. It did give more space in the bedroom, but I should have been asked.

What is ironic is that the plumber was recommended by a builder I had, and who was supposed to clear the back garden of all the stuff left by his activity, but who didn't and even left some of his own.

I have a new tank/cylinder. Very nice it is too.

I am now heating my water via solar power. The gas boiler has been turned off! Whoopee!
@Tilly

Neat. Solar electricity or direct solar-heated water?

Question Author
I'm not sure, Hypo. :-)

We've had solar panels on the roof for five years and now some of the power from them is going towards heating our water.
