Thick Ice Around The Top Of A Freezer

Any good ideas, heard of using a hairdryer, or banging the thick ice with a hammer,or turning freezer off, but any usefull hints please on removing this surplus layer of ice.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.We use a palette knife for removing the thick ice from around the top of our chest freezer - casseroles of boiling water for a few minutes, then push the palette knife blade under the ice and crack it off. It only takes us about an hour to defrost ours (the sort of time it might take you to get frozen food from the freezer shop to home), so putting the contents into cold bags keeps them frozen for long enough to get the job done.
