Pipes rumbling

Twice in the last week, when I have flushed one of the toilets in my house (different one each time) there has been an almighty rumble and vibration from the pipework around the house that has lasted almost until the cistern has refilled. The noise is tremendous. The noise does not come from the toilet itself and is not affected by turning a tap on. Only the central heating was on at the time, nothing else. My house is only 3 yrs old and the problem has not been seen before.
What could it be? Has something broken? Do I need to get someone in? Help!

If your water pipes sometimes make a loud "hammering noise" after the toilet has been flushed or sink, etc. Ask at the hardware store for something for "waterhammer". It's a fitting or somesuch thing which is easily installed in the line. A common problem and not very expensive. - -

Ref 'hammering water pipes'. This is caused by a pressure build up of water in the pipes. The simplest solution is to turn down your water pressure at the stop-**** -- (:)

Don't panic - it sounds like something our toilet was doing - a really awful noise after you flushed that sounded like a very bad trumpet! My hubby fixed it quite easily by replacing a little plastic bit (sorry not much help as I can't remember what it was called and he's not here) anyway ask at a diy store as they were the ones that helped us
