In my week of household disasters put a pan of onions and mince on last night and promptly forgot about it (got distracted gossiping as you do). It is thick black. Boiling hot water and washing up liquid has shifted some. Any other bright ideas?

(Ps am giving up household stuff ad a kindness to ABers)

It's stainless steel as BM has said. I've burnt numerous of them and have always got them clean.
Steep in highest grade of bleach and leave for a cuppla day. Burnt bits just come away
You need a metal scraper like a wallpaper scraper. That gets the burnt on stuff off. I work in a pro kitchen where we do 1,000 meals a day ( +15 Kg of bacon & 10 Kg sausages every morning just for breakfast rolls!), one chef in particular has a well earned reputation as a 'burn on expert'. I've never had to throw a pan out yet. Some take 2 or 3 days 'in the soak' but they always come clean in the end. Remember our pans are 'Missionary cooking pots' the littlest ones are 2 L the largest are 125 L .
Barmaid, what sort of pan? Stainless steel, cast iron, enamelled? If it was a non stick or Teflon coated bin it. The others can be resurrected with a bit of graft.
Just seen that it is Stainless Steel. Eddie is right. I once had a damn good ss pan outside for a month in winter soaking, and scraping it now and again. The thing is with ss , you can give it a good scrubbing. I would avoid wire wool or brillo pads as they deposit tiny bits of steel that rusts into the pan surface. It still hangs on the pan rack and is used daily.
Boil rhubarb in it......works
Bin it -life is really too short to stuff a mushroom.
Angle grinder with a 40 grit Flap Disc
....and NEVER use chlorine bleach in a stainless steel pan!
That should do it, Bertrum
ginge - you've told her that before :-D
I have had good results using Actilift bio washing pwder and boiling water and soaking it for 24 hours.

lol - I have done it before?!!! Really?!!! That does surprise me. (not)

Thanks all - the bio lifted some of it. I shall repeat. I also have another plan on which I shall report back later.
