I'm giving a birthday dinner party tonight (mine :0) and I want it to be candle-lit. There will be seven of us in a not very large room, do you think 8 candles plus an antique oil lamp will be enough?
No fork handles jokes please

Thanks, it is no quite dark and I think it will be enough, I'll use a low electric lamp while everyone gets settled. I know that after a while when eyes adjust it seem quite light.
Everything's set, first ones should be arriving shortly, always a nervous moment. Cheers!

Candlelight is very forgiving, both for people and food. You do need good specs though, mind you, after a couple of glasses of something you no one will care what they're eating.

Thank you all for your congratulations, the party was a great success, and for the record and with the festive season ahead; 7 standard size candles along an 8 feet dining table was quite sufficient - I had four of those small night-light candles around the edge of the room, there was enough light, once accustomed, to look at some photographs.
Everyone loved the atmosphere and when an electric light got switched on by accident, boos and cries of "swich it off" were heard.
