Mysterious Carpet Stain.....

OK I have a stain that is a series of long thin patches in a line, slightly darker than the carpet, which is fairly dark. The stain does not smell and is dry but it moves over time! It is making it's way across the floor! I'm wondering what will happen when it reaches the wall! Any ideas before I lift carpet?

Are you saying the stain literally moves, i.e. appears and then fades, in a way whereby it "shifts" - or is it growing steadily and covering greater and greater area ?

Will it move up the vacuum cleaner tube ?
A stain that cleans up behind itself, is a new one on me.

no Karl, it keeps the same shape but is in a different place, moves about half and inch a day, I've measured it!
That's the thing OG the hoover makes no difference, I don't understand what could possibly be causing it!
