can anybody tell me how to set a barometer please. I have been given a really nice one and have no idea, how to set it.

Hi, what do you mean by set it,  the actual indicating part should be preset and require no adjustment if used at or about  sea level,  if you want to use it at a much higher level but still want it to show sea level pressure then pls read this http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~fsdata/data/html/baromset.htm
There should be a small adjusting screw on the back of the instrument, turn gently to set pointer. Periodically weather forcasters tell the exact barometric pressure, between 28 & 31 inches (or in millibars.)  Mine currently is 29.7 or 1010 millibars.

I have just set it at 29.7 .

It is reaking fair and a temp of 72

Do not place it above a fire or radiator. This will give you false readings.
