House Spiders

I moved into this house 3 years ago and up until now I've had no spiders at all in the house in this August/September period, for which I have been really grateful, as I really don't like them. But suddenly I've got some monsters in the house. The other evening I had 3 in the living room - 2 average size, and one monster. The big one was being attacked by a smaller one, at least that's what it looked like. Is the reason they're back this year because I'm not cleaning enough? Is there anything I can do to discourage them? I know they do a lot of good, but the big ones are so scary. Can anyone help this gibbering arachnaphobe please?

EEEEK !
Sorry...that's the best I can manage.
put conkers near doors and windows xx
Dont be a wuss! Gently let it onto a feather duster & shake it off outdoors.
I do sympathise as they truly terrify me. I saw that in the DM yesterday and couldn't look at it because of the pictures. Firstly they come inside to mate somewhere warm, that could be what you saw. As a lifelong phobe I'd say conkers don't work, keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible. I put ant powder in the recesses of external doors and that seems to help. Don't believe it if a poster comes on here, as they do every year, and tells you the big ones are in your house all year but you don't see them. They are coming in from outside.
Its just the time of year, I feel sorry for the poor ***, when the colder weather moves in they should decline. I'm more worried about the rabid wasps at the moment!
They don't like lemon so we polish with lemon furniture polish (when we do lol) and get very few considering our house is a rambling and ancient old pile and we are not great lovers of housework. If we spot one we drop a glass over him and slide some paper underneath and evict him a long way away form the house in one of the outbuildings.

Thanks everyone. Yes I am a wuss, though I can usually manage the glass and card business. It was just a small army invading, with one the size of a small mouse - and fighting in the corner! Ugh! Thanks anyway. Incidentally I hope they do live outside and not inside. Feels a bit better......
Either splat them with a fly swat or pick them up and release them outside . Simple.
It's not really simple if you have a real fear, I can't go near them even to kill them - if I'm alone and just have to do it then I'm in a cold sweat, weepy and in a state for some hours. This time of year I'm constantly on edge in the evenings. If my husband is away I go to bed in the dark in case I see one.
Like any fear, Prudie. I live in fear of my cat bringing in mice or birds. It's not the animals I fear, it's in case my cat has injured them.

My cat can open the living room door and one time I heard he had something so sat with my back against that door for over an hour before I got the bottle to check.

There was a dead mouse he'd kindly left in my sons shoe!
Spiders can sense fear ...they know where you sleep..and love to hide in your hair!!
That's not nice :-D
I walked into my wood store a while ago and felt a cobweb on my face..brushed it off with my hand and then saw about 500 'spiderlings' on my hand and arm. I ran into the house and checked in the mirror and had thousands crawling over my hair and neck....little beauties.
That would freak me out!! I don't mind spiders as individuals but they must have moved out of home and not bring any of their siblings into my house...

I won't hoover a cobweb that has a spider in it but if it pops out it's gonna return homeless...
They love living in the vacuum cleaner....all that dead skin etc.
ohhhhhhhhh Spiders... I'm terrified too.. Mr C bought me a spider hoover... think it was from Lakeland.. sorry I'm a bit thick, and cant post links..lol it had a small motor..connected to a long plastic tube.. switch on.. then ''hoover'' spider into the tube...which they cant then climb back up.. turn the motor off..hold the tube up.. and let scary spider out into the garden..It really works.. I'm terrifeid.. but cant hurt theme ither so this is a brilliant soloution for me! good luck Mrs C x
Ryzen...I don't hoover up spiders...just their webs when they have vacated.

Crisper - I know what you mean. I've seen them.
