Colour Wash Floorboards

I want to colour wash the floor boards in my bathroom. What ratio of paint: water do I use and should the paint be matt or silk? I've sanded the floorboards down, but do they need to be sealed with a PVA primer either before or after the application?

Most DIY stores stock special paint for floorboards. Details of how to do the job are on the tins .. sorry I only glanced at the instructions so am not able to give you any more info.
