Would anyone know if you have to have a modern consumer unit rather than an old fashioned fuse box before a smart meter can be fitted??

No expert, but, I can't see why not, but why wouldn't you want to replace the old fusebox ? (Or have a smart meter for that matter.)
I'm pretty sure that even though it is not strictly necessary they will say that a new consumer unit is needed.
Not an answer to the question, but I went online to update my tariff with BG this morning and before it would let me do it I had to agree to have a smart meter fitted (I didn't btw)! I rang them and sorted it over the phone. Are these the sort of tactics we can expect so that they can force these meters on us in the future?
When we were with Scottish Gas we got a smart meter.

The fuse box wasn't altered.

Since we switched supplier the meter lost its smart features.
I have a smart meter and an old fashioned fuse box. Mine is with British Gas
