We need a floor standing reading lamp, now that the darker evenings are upon us.

Any recommendations as there are so many out there? I did look at The Serious Readers website and the lamps seem very expensive. Is it necessary to buy a lamp with costs up to £399.00?

No, of course not. Have a look in somewhere like B+Q.
very pretty, but is there any actual comparative guide to how bright these things are?

Thank you very much for the links, Chris.

Any personal recommendations please?
Tilly....you can always change the bulb for a more powerful one.

I want something that looks attractive and is useful.

LED? Halogen?

no, i bought one from argos can't remember the cost but doubt it was more than 50 quid.
Ikea have a good range - reasonably priced

I'm not really bothered about the price, just the efficacy and look of the lamp.

Tilly........halogen gives a very bright light but it can get fearfully hot, and it costs a fortune to run. Try an led one instead.
mine has an ordinary old type bulb, which hasn't need changing for years.

Thank you all for your help.
mine is pretty, with purple shade, and small globes in purple on the stem. gives enough light for reading.
There are loads on Amazon if you want to look and compare them.

I think I'll go over to MK and have a look in John Lewis. We used to have a lovely lighting shop in Bedford but it has now closed. Can't even try BHS either. :-(
If you're going to MK anyway, Refined Lighting might be worth a look:

All you need is a floor-standing lamp of your choice fitted with a good LED bulb (although electricians don't seem to call them bulbs!..."they're lamps, bulbs are for the garden").
An 800-900 lumen lamp would be enough....and you can choose a "cool white" or "warm white"....your choice.

Once again, thank you all.
These may be a bit 'functional' - but they are the best reading lamps I've ever found :
