Would like clear varnish for ceramic coasters, guaranteed not to melt when coffee cup with boiling water contained in it is left on it. Only a small amount is needed. Advice please.

A water based clear varnish should do the job.

A varnish has already been used on coasters that I bought, but it does not seem to withstand the heat from a hot mug - it might just be waterproof
Why on earth do you want to varnish ceramic? depending on how it was fired it is one of the hardest surfaces you can have, no varnish is harder.

The ceramic tile has been covered with something that looks like wrapping paper and the shop bought varnish coating has melted on use with a hot drink
You could try something like Rust-Oleum

Rustoleum - sounds interesting. I wonder if anyone has tried it on a paper covered ceramic tile. Thank you to the people who have contributed to this post.
A hard flooring-type varnish should do it. That stuff is bomb-proof.

Will the floor varnish withstand heat?
So really you're not covering ceramic tiles the surface you are covering is actually paper?
Not promoting any brand but this stuff appears to be heat resistant:-

I guess it would be a case of seeing whatever one you choose does what it says on the tin? Your local hardware place should be able to advise!
