Help with doggy puddles!

I have a 16 and a half year old completely blind Yorkshire Terrier, who is a little bit incontinent - up to now her puddles have been restricted to the kitchen floor (easy to mop up!) but in the last few weeks she has started to wee on my lounge carpet (normally in roughly the same place)....how can I .....

1. get rid of the smell successfully?

2. what can I do to put her off going back to the same spot?

My friend has an old Westie and she uses a large cat litter tray. She found her dog didn't like ordinary litter, so she bought a bag of sand, but too be honest it's not always succesful. A soda siphon is also handy for cleaning up. apparently, it lifts more of the dried in residue, thus reducing any smell. Hope this helps and good luck to you both.

It may not be homes and gardens but can I suggest that when you have cleaned, you put down something waterproof and put the tray where your oldie has already learned to use? She can't have much longer and it would be a kindness not to stress her too far.

I had a similar problem with an elderly dog who went onto diuretic heart medication and couldn't control himself at first while we were sorting his schedule. I got one of those small carpet shampooers which spray out shampoo and then vac it up again and used it with the reccommended shampoo and a biological deoderiser from the pet shop. They are a bit dear but solved the problem completely and are useful when other members of the family have little accidents eg with a glass of wine (what did you think i meant??)

I also have a Yorkie and she does the same thing she likes to go potty behind our living room chair...I put a puppy pad back there it protects the carpet. I have used a cleaner from the pet store that you can spray on the spots..(even old spots)and you let it sit and then you clean up with a towel or rag by blotting it up. It gets rid of the odor and it smells like baby powder.... It also makes it so the dog cant smell there old spot. Im sure you know but if a dog smells urine on things it makes them go there again.... I bought this stuff by the gallon and went ahead and shampooed my whole living room..It worked.....

Hope this helps I cant think of the name but you can call any pet store and ask, they have many products to chose from... :)

Your dog doesn't sound incontinent as she is weeing in the same place by scent the litter tray idea sounds good. when your dog pees next try to get the scent in the litter tray (i dont need to explain how to do this lol). make sure there is no trace of urine in the carpet or kitchen floor for her to find thro scent. use something with a strong smell to clean it. hopefully the dog will follow her scent to the litter tray.
