As in the hob has stopped working?
The burners on the hob are controlled by a thermocouple - if the gas gets cut off the burner turns itself off so that, if the gas comes back on, the cooker isn't spilling unburnt gas into the room. If the thermocouple fails the gas won't stay on.

yes the hob has stopped working, the oven is ok as is the grill.

a job for Cannon then?

or Hotpoint as it turns out, as i phoned cannons number and was informed that number was no longer in use and directed me to hotpoint.

is it easily fixable?
I've never had the problem with a cooker but changing the thermocouple on my central heating boiler was easy - about £5 for the part and I did it myself.

i wouldn't have a clue, i am going to phone hotpoint tomorrow, which could well be very costly.
Doesn't each gas ring have its own thermocouple. It would be strange if they had all failed, wouldn't it?
andrew - I think you're right. I've never had thermocouple problems with a cooker but, when I think about it, if I don't hold the control knob for long enough after lighting a burner it's only that burner which goes off. If there were just one thermocouple all the burners would go off.
I think the CHichester has a drop down lid to cover the hob burners which cuts off the gas when closed. I suspect this valve is the problem in that its not opening when the ld is raised ?
Good thinking emeritus - I'm not familiar with that particular cooker but it seems a likely cause. Perhaps emmie can see what moves when she lifts/closes the lid and see if anything is sticking.
Check youtube for your hob

the gas isn't emitting from the hob, i have called out the engineers, who are coming tomorrow. I don't like anything to do with gas or electric, good advice though.
It is probably the lid cut off valve sticking if you have ignition spark when turning the hob "ring controls". When the lid is down it turns off the gas supply and opens it again to allow gas when lifted. If it is sticking off when the lid is lifted .....no gas.
Didn't read through before posting as I did not want to be "influenced". I see that Emeritus is of the same opinion. That is good enough for me Emmie.
