Dish-Washer With Eco-Friendly Means

I tire of popping in assorted tablets/powders for the dish-washer to do the honours.
I always think of the mixture of environment-unfriendly chemicals being continually disposed from the D-W into our already-polluted waters.
Does anybody know of eco-friendly substances that are just as effective in cleaning dishes and maintaining unclogged piping?
