4 Answers
Our small bathroom ceiling is covered in this and varnished. Likewise our flat roofed sun-room. Is there a reason why these surfaces can't be painted white?

No need to strip the T and G. A rub down with wet and dry, tack off and a coat of shellac based primer, as shown in the link. https:/ /www.sc rewfix. com/c/d ecorati ng/pain t/cat85 0142?br and=zin sser&am p;cm_sp =landin gpage-_ -azbran ds-_-zi nsser&a mp;ds_k id=4370 0026096 882629& amp;utm _source =bing&a mp;utm_ medium= cpc& ;utm_ca mpaign= Brands% 20InvM% 20%7C%2 0Zinsse r&u tm_term =zinsse r%20pro ducts&a mp;utm_ content =Zinsse r%20-%2 0Pure&a mp;ds_r l=12494 78& ds_rl=1 245250& amp;gcl id=COTQ r4rc-9k CFQ0LGw odM1YPJ Q&g clsrc=d s&d clid=CP ztzorc- 9kCFcKM 7Qodzsw KRA
As long as you clean the surface, and sugar soap is the best for this https:/ /www.sc rewfix. com/p/n o-nonse nse-con centrat ed-liqu id-suga r-soap- 500ml/6 1880, there should be no need for the laborious process of stripping off the varnish, BUT do not use emulsion paint, use only oil based paints, undercoat and finish.
