Slow Release Of Bubbles In Carbonated Drinks

When you open a bottle or can of fizzy drink, the bubbles start rising quite fast at first. If you leave the container open for several hours, there will still be bubbles rising, although in fewer numbers, and it can be a very long time before there are no more bubbles at all. Why is this? Why, when the pressure is first released, do the bubbles not all come exploding out of the liquid at once? What is it that causes some to come out quickly, while others don't appear for hours? Is there any particular difference between the very first bubbles, and the last stragglers?
