How can I stop my boiler 'kettling'? It gets very noisy.

Your heating may be 'furred up' with scale or sludge. Best thing to do is drain & flush the system. Then add some corrosion inhibitor.

This can either be added into the heating header tank (if it's a fairly old style system) or into a radiator.

You can buy a solution from B+Q which will reduce the deposits.

To do

Turn off water supply to your C/H system (main water or tie the ballcock off)

Flush with water for a while in drain from a drain off point.

Fill up again, but stop before the header tank is full so you can put the solution in without diluting it or place in a radiator if you have removed one.

Fill system completely and remove any air

Run system for the time it states on the pack of solution or as a general guide a couple of weeks will be fine.

Flush system again

Add some inhibitor (and keep topped up on an annual basis). This will not remove any scale build up but will greatly reduce the chance of it occuring in the first place

Failing this you can pay for a plumber to do the same (pricey)

Yes, suspect the whole system is clogged up with limescale and sludge. Flushing everything through might help. The bad news could be that if it's more than 20 years old you may new a new boiler. Budget for �2,000 - they're not cheap !

This can also be caused by the water flow through the boiler being too slow, speed up the pump. It could also be overfired, reduce the burner output, or running too high a temperature, replace faulty boiler stat or simply caused by a poorly designed boiler and/or system.

Converting from an open system to a sealed system under pressure will also quieten it down by increasing the boiling temperature in hot spots if it can't otherwise be improved, unblocked or descaled fully.

Might just be time for a new system though.
