My carpeted stairs are rather 'felted' and I would also like to use it on car footwell carpets. As well as having a good vacuum, I would like to get a handheld cordless vacuum with a crevice tool, which deals with this problem - possibly with a firm rotating brush tool. A reasonable running time of about 30 minutes, from a full battery and a sensibly sized easy to empty dust container. Do not want to pay more than £200. Any suggestions please?

i bought a Dyson V7 Motorhead, with detachable head for use on carpets, furniture and the like, it has one drawback, that you have to keep your finger on the start button the whole time, why i have no idea, but there is no off/on button as such.
i paid 250 for mine but its dual purpose...
We also have a cordless Dyson and think that needing to keep your finger on the "trigger" is an advantage...means that power is being used only when you need it. It's not as if it's a big effort...it has a very light action.

Would a 'stick' vacuum cleaner be more effective than a hand held one? I am thinking about the narrowness of the stair tread too and whether the motorised brush on a stick vacuum would be just as accessible as the small one.
Will also consider when to purchase an item, such as whether to leave it until 'Black Friday' or not. Will have to research this one.

Thank you for your answers, by the way.

I'm a big Dyson fan (and so is Which?) and all their "stick" cordless vacs convert to a handheld...so you're getting two-in-one.
