here's a better link https://www.cookersandovens.co.uk/blog/catalytic-or-pyrolytic/
My Rangemaster oven has catalytic coated plates and they are pretty well useless. My previous to ovens also had them, all useless. The next time I change out, I am going for pyrolytic. We had a pyrolytic oven in America in a rented house in the 90's and its completely magic, works just as its described. All the mank in the oven is reduced to a tiny amount of clean grey ash which you can wipe, brush or even vaccuum away.
I have a so-called self-cleaning oven - it doesn't!
I had one then when I renewed went for a self cleaning one, wish I had stayed with the previous model and paid a bit more. So easy to clean, just put it on the setting required, depending how dirty the oven is and then shut the door and forget about it. Takes about 2/3 hours and you cannot open the door because it is so hot. When finished all you get is a load of ash at the bottom. The self cleaning ones are useless in comparison. Both models I have had have been Neff.
the problem is that BOTH kinds are described as self cleaning.....better to use the terms catalytic (doesn't work) and pyrolytic (does work)

Hi woof/ diddly/ riptide .... Id looked up pyrolytic ovens and was put of when I read they can sometimes give off fumes whilst burning off, and that it could set fire alarms off but it did say that would be on initial use. Thanks for giving me your personal thoughts having had a catalytic oven, pyrolytic do now sound the best. I need a new oven, anything that helps to clean one without much effort is fantastic!
